Eli Lilly and Co. (Lilly) will jointly manufacture the generic version of Viagra and the brand version of the drug. The drug is already available only by prescription.
Pfizer said the deal would include Lilly’s exclusive right to manufacture the generic version of Viagra. Lilly will also contribute $5 billion to the development of its own production line of generic Viagra.
The company said the agreements “will ensure that Viagra and other impotence treatments are not available to the public without a prescription.”
The agreement will also allow the company to make the generic version of Pfizer’s erectile dysfunction drug Viagra available for patients to buy as a generic drug. Lilly will manufacture the generic version of Viagra.
Under the agreement, Pfizer will own the exclusive right to sell the generic Viagra and the brand Viagra, while Lilly will own the exclusive right to manufacture the new drug.
